Every time you book a flight or a trip through a travel expert, you are most likely confronted with the question of “do you want to purchase travel insurance?” Many times we think, “Nah, I travel a lot and never needed it in the past.”

Well, my philosophy has always been to err on the side of caution – especially when I’m taking a big trip to Africa.

In fact, on a recent trip to South Africa, where I was schedule to guide a group of 50 individuals through the country’s most beautiful regions, I purchased a basic travel health insurance plan that cost me $89.00. This did not cover flight delays, trip interruption, or lost luggage – just health expenses, if needed. Pretty good deal, right?

Well, unfortunately, I had to use that travel health insurance, and boy was I glad I purchased it! During my flight to South Africa, I got a deep vein thrombosis (AKA a blood clot) in my leg and was taken to the hospital as soon as I got off the airplane.

For my $89.00 I was admitted to the hospital for five days and received excellent care. All the treatments, medications, doctor visits, and ultrasounds cost a whopping $2,500.00! But guess what? My $89.00 travel health insurance covered it all!

I also got escorted home to North Carolina from Cape Town. Insurance paid for a nurse to fly with me home. We flew first class in lie-flat beds.

So next time you ask yourself, “do I really need health insurance?” think about my story and the $89.00 I spent. It was WELL worth it.

Think about how much more you could enjoy yourself instead of worrying “what if I get sick or hurt?”
