Depending on which country you are visiting in Africa, you may be required to obtain certain vaccinations and show proof upon entering that specific country. While some countries do not require specific vaccinations to enter, your healthcare provider may recommend you receive several.

It is important to note, though, that each country is different in terms of what vaccinations are required and / or recommended. So it is essential that you speak with your personal physician about the specific Africa destinations you’ll be visiting, at least one month prior to departure.

The Center for Disease Control recommends the following vaccines – no matter where you are visiting in Africa:

  • Hepatitis A or immune globulin (IG)
  • Hepatitis B (a disease transmitted via blood)
  • Typhoid
  • Booster doses for tetanus-diphtheria, measles, and a one-time dose of polio vaccine

Some countries do REQUIRE a yellow fever vaccination certificate upon entering the country. Other countries recommend the yellow fever vaccination. It is advised that travelers receive the yellow fever vaccination if they are traveling to the following countries within southern, eastern, and central Africa:

**NOTE: some of the countries above REQUIRE proof of yellow fever vaccination – check with your African safari specialist prior to travel to see if the countries you are visiting require the yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Below are quick tips to keep in mind when it comes to vaccinations for Africa:

  • Visit your primary care physician or a Passport Health office at LEAST four to six weeks prior to departing for your trip to Africa.
  • Some countries REQUIRE specific vaccinations to enter. Make sure you understand the requirements for each country you will be visiting.
  • Have useful health contacts on hand during your trip, including the contact information for The Center for Disease Control. (phone number is 800.232-4636 and website is www.cdc.gov).
  • Do NOT forget to bring prescription medications with you for your African safari vacation. It is unlikely you will be able to obtain certain medications while in Africa.
  • For medications that are questionable as to whether they will be allowed in the country, please bring a valid prescription and letter stating the medical need for the medication.
