It’s typically the big game that attracts travelers to the remote reaches of Africa. But what many travelers don’t realize before their trip to Africa is that the smaller animals are just as, if not more, exciting as the big ones!
Below I’ve shared some of my favorite pictures of the smaller animals and birds you may come across on an African safari vacation:
How adorable is this precious little rock hyrax just hanging out in the Zimbabwe bush? Too cute.
A stunning King Fisher bird, photographed by one of our clients.
A wild dog pup approached our game drive vehicle in Sabi Sands Game Reserve before scampering off to play with his siblings.
Try to look past the Cape buffalo at the funny little oxpecker bird. These birds love to clean the ears, eyes, and skin of the animals in the African bush and they’re quite entertaining to watch!
Look at that little stinker. You can view penguins in various colonies around the coast of South Africa.
You’ve got to love the warthog.
A lone hyena travels through the grasses of Sabi Sands Game Reserve.
Impala graze while keeping a watchful eye on their surroundings.
The Southern Yellow-Billed Hornbill might look like an angry bird but their coloring is quite beautiful!
The lilac-breasted roller is one of Africa’s most beautiful birds and is frequently spotted on safari throughout southern and eastern Africa!
A chameleon ejects his tongue to catch an unsuspecting fly on the charming island of Nosy Be in Madagascar.
A black lemur in Madagascar lounges on a giant leaf.
