From witnessing the Big Five to delighting in exceptional cuisine, and tracking the elusive leopard to enjoying sundowners in the bush, Savanna Private Game Reserve is celebrated for its enchanting and magical atmosphere.

Within the reserve, which is situated in the greater Sabi Sand Reserve of South Africa, is Savanna Game Lodge, which offers visitors a highly personalized and luxurious experience within the heart of the wilderness.

Things to do at Savanna Lodge:

Savanna is all about a balanced mix of adventure, relaxation, and exploration. Below are spotlights on some of the various South Africa safari tours and activities offered at Savanna Game Lodge:

Game drives: Savanna is famous for its exceptional game drives within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Guests witness a wide variety of animals and learn about their behavior and personalities from the guide. Some of the animals you might witness while on safari at Savanna include warthog, hyena, lions (we saw 3 lionesses and 5 cubs on a recent visit), rhino, leopard, elephant, cape buffalo, wild dog (which are very rare and we saw adults and pups!), zebra, and impala. Those are just a few of the wildlife you can witness on safari at Savanna.

Walking safaris: Upon request, walking safaris can be arranged where your guide and tracker will take you around the vicinity of the lodge to track lion, rhino, and other animals. During walking safaris you’ll also have the opportunity to witness a wide variety of birds and smaller animals.

Spa treatments: From aromatherapy to massages and manicures to pedicures, Savanna places a strong emphasis on wellness for its guests, offering a variety of spa treatments. These treatments can take place indoors or outdoors and in the privacy of your own suite.

Village tours: Guests wishing to visit a local village can arrange for a village tour where they’ll visit a local school and a traditional medicine man to learn about the Shangaan culture.

Elephant sanctuary visits: Guests can request to visit the local elephant sanctuary to feed the elephants and ride them, as well.

Golfing at Leopard Creek Course: One of the best golf courses in South Africa, Leopard Creek Course attracts avid golfers from around the world to play on its challenging greens. Golfers visiting Savanna can arrange for a day of golf here.

Cuisine at Savanna Lodge:

Morning game drives begin between 5:30 and 6:30am; therefore, before heading out, Savanna has an assortment of tea cakes and biscuits, as well as tea and coffee, on display in the main lodge area prior to your game drive. Upon arrival back to the lodge you’ll enjoy a proper breakfast around 10 / 10:30am. There are a variety of options on display to choose from, including cheeses and crackers, yogurts, cereals, and biscuits. You can then order an omelet, breakfast sandwich, or other hot breakfast item from your server.

Lunch is served around 3:30pm and is cooked fresh daily by the on-site chef. The items in the lunch buffet are different each day and everything is EXCEPTIONAL! Buffet items range from seafood curry and rice to fruit, sautéed vegetables, butternut squash quiche, tomato tart, and so much more.

Dinner is served in a different location every night! Dinner is plated; therefore there is no buffet option. The dinner menu also changes daily so guests can rest assured that they will never eat the same thing two days in a row! Some of the dishes you might see during your stay include beef filet with mashed potatoes and vegetables, duck with wild rice and vegetables, mushroom risotto, fish, soup, and tofu. There are also some entertaining surprises for many of the meals, including local village singers, candlelit dinners in the bush, and more!

During afternoon game drives your guide will stop in the bush and setup a display of biltong (which is similar to our beef jerky but it’s better!), dried fruits, and nuts. He or she will also provide you with a sundowner beverage of your choice.

One thing is for sure, you will never go hungry at Savanna!

Accommodations at Savanna Lodge:

There are three types of rooms offered at Savanna Lodge, including the luxury suites, executive suites, and the Savanna suite. Both the executive and luxury suites offer a double bed option or a queen bed option. The executive suites are larger than the luxury suites, but both options offer a free-standing tub, an indoor and outdoor shower, canvas roofs (the walls and flooring are solid), and air conditioning and fans. The executive suites have their own private plunge pools, which each overlook a watering hole where animals frequent throughout the day.

Each suite is stocked with a mini bar, containing water bottles, tea bags, wine bottles, biscuits, and a water boiler. Rooms also contain wi-fi, a hairdryer, electrical converters, and basic toiletries. Each guest also receives a gift bag with a mini sunscreen bottle, bug spray, hand sanitizer, and lip sunscreen, as well as a reusable water bottle.

The overall ambiance of Savanna Lodge is luxurious and romantic with a rustic flare. The coloring of the lodge and its suites are natural, bringing the tranquility of the wilderness into each of the rooms and the overall experience.

Getting to Savanna Lodge:

Upon arrival at Johannesburg Airport (NOTE: the airport you are coming from could be different) you will take a short ride to the Federal Air Lounge where you will await for your flight to Sabi Sand. The lounge offers guests comfortable leather seating and clean bathrooms, as well as complimentary snacks, teas, coffee, soft drinks, and wi-fi.

Once it’s time for your flight you will go through brief security before boarding your aircraft. These can range from 21-seater aircrafts to 10-seater aircrafts. Note that there are luggage restrictions for small charter flights (check with your African safari specialist before departing for your trip to ensure that you comply with flight regulations). Larger, rolling bags can be left at the Federal Air Lounge in a secure location to be picked up upon return to the airstrip.

The flight to Sabi Sand from Johannesburg is approximately 1-hour long. Upon arrival to the Sabi Sand airstrip, your guide will be waiting to drive you to the lodge. The lodge is approximately 30-minutes from the airstrip so you can experience an exciting game drive on your way to Savanna!

Upon arrival at Savanna, guests are greeted with a beverage and will meet their tracker and butler who will be catering to them during their stay.

NOTE: Because Savanna Game Lodge is an all-inclusive lodge, your daily rate includes all of your meals, beverages (excluding select wines and imported beverages), accommodation, laundry, two game drives per day, and optional bush walk per day.
