There are a number of new lodges and camps opening (or reopening) in Africa in the second half of 2022, and we’ve got all of the details for you! Whether you’re looking for something new for your next trip to Africa or you just love that new lodge smell, read on to find out the latest and greatest new options for your African safari vacation accommodation!

Duke’s Camp, Botswana (opening June 2022)

This new camp from Natural Selection offers 8 tents (6 twins and 2 doubles) all on raised wooden platforms. The camp will add 4 additional tents by March 2023, for a total of 12 tents. Reminiscent of its sister camp (Jack’s Camp, in the Makgadikagadi Pans), Duke’s Camp will bring “under-canvas luxury” to the northern Okavango Delta.


Okavango Explorers Camp, Botswana (opening July 2022)

Not far from Duke’s Camp, Great Plains Conservation is opening their Okavango Explorers Camp, in the southwest region of Selinda Reserve. The camp offers 6 canvas tents with outdoor sitting areas. The focus is on wildlife, since the region is prime predator and elephant habitat — lion, leopard and wild dogs are frequently sighted in the area, and more than 9,000 elephants make their home in the Selinda Reserve during the dry season.

Sanctuary Tambarare, Kenya (opening June 2022)

This luxury camp in the shadow of Mount Kenya is home to 10 luxury tented rooms, each with a private veranda overlooking the grassy plains. Located in the 90,000-acre Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the area surrounding the lodge is home to the Big Five, including the last two northern white rhinos.

The Homestead, South Africa (opening 2022)

Located in the Nambiti Private Game Reserve in South Africa, The Homestead is a unique eco-luxury lodge offering 12 unique suites, 6 with their own roof gardens, and 6 with private pools. The focus at The Homestead is on sustainable building practices and an overall positive impact on its surroundings and the local communities.

Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira, Mozambique (opening July 2023)

Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira is located on the private island of Ilha Caldeira, just off the coast of Mozambique. This luxury beach resort will feature 40 private pool villas, each with oceanfront views. Accommodations range from the 805-square-foot, one-bedroom Bliss Pool Villa to the 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom Harmony Pool Villa. Visitors can take advantage of the opportunity to dive at Ilha Caldeira, a world-class diving site and part of a marine protected area which is home to 20% of Mozambique’s intact living coral.

Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge, Tanzania (reopening June 2022)

While &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge is not a completely new property, it has been fully rebuilt since a flood damaged the lodge in April 2020. The refurbished lodge offers 10 light-filled suites, each with a private plunge pool, and a new family suite featuring a small additional attached bedroom. Its location in the far western reaches of the Serengeti ensures the ultimate in exclusivity.

Kisawa Sanctuary, Mozambique (opened July 2021)

Although Kisawa Sanctuary held its grand opening in July 2021, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share this stunning property. Located on the southern tip of Benguerra Island, Kisawa offers 14 unique, individually furnished residences, each with its own beachfront, private infinity pool and day area (which includes an outdoor kitchen, cabana, and dedicated service team). The property offers a variety of culinary- and wellbeing-focused activities, as well as nature-based adventures off-site.

Kiri Camp, Botswana (opening June 2022)

Situated on a private concession in the Okavango Delta (also home to Gomoti Plains Camp) Kiri Camp is home to 2 family tents and 8 double tents, each positioned on the side of a slope to ensure sweeping views of the Kiri River and the surrounding floodplains. Both land-based game drives and water-based safari activities, including mokoro rides, are offered (dependent on the season).

Lolebezi Safari Lodge, Zambia (opening June 2022)

Lolebezi, the newest member of the African Bush Camps family, bills itself as “a wild, remote and luxurious experience on the … Zambezi River.” The camp offers 4 superior suites and 2 double family units, and all 6 suites come with a private plunge pool. Situated on 5 hectares of protected wilderness, Lolebezi also has 1 km of private river frontage, and the area is famous for its leopard population and elephant herds.

Usangu Expedition Camp, Tanzania (opening June 2022)

Asila Africa’s newest lodging option, Usangu Expedition Camp is situated on the banks of the Usangu wetlands. It is home to just 4 tents with en-suite bathrooms and hot-water bucket showers. Activities include boating and canoeing during the wet months and walking through grasslands in the dry months. The neighboring Douglas Bell Eco Research Station offers the opportunity to get involved in a variety a scientific activities, such as placing camera traps or helping to track lions.

Sungani Lodge and Kulandila Camp, Zambia (opened May 2022)

Sungani Lodge and Kulandila Camp are two new family-run camps in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. Sungani Lodge overlooks a vast lagoon and is home to 7 luxury (air-conditioned!) guest tents with private plunge pools — 4 king rooms (for two guests each) and 3 double rooms (accommodating 2 adults and 2 children each). Furthur upstream, you’ll find the smaller Kulandila Camp, which is home to just 4 tents, each with an outdoor bath on a private deck. Guests at both camps can enjoy morning and evening game drives, guided bush walks, photographic hides, bush meals, seasonal boating, and more.

Waterside at Royal Malewane, South Africa (opening July 2022)

The latest addition to The Royal Portfolio (which includes Royal Malewane, Birkenhead House, La Residence, and the Silo Hotel), Waterside at Royal Malewane overlooks a tranquil watering hole on the western border of the Greater Kruger National Park. Waterside offers 4 one-bedroom luxury suites, 1 two-bedroom suite (Baobab Suite), and 1 four-bedroom suite (Waterside House, pictured above), all of which are decorated in jewel tones with private plunge pools and expansive decks.
