Have a day to explore Cape Town? Make sure to spend some time at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is located just on the outskirts of the Cape Town city center.
Here, you can witness hundreds of plant species from all over the African continent, including South Africa’s gorgeous and vast plant kingdom.
As you enter the gardens, you will quickly recognize that they gardens are some of the most mature and beautiful in the world. Built in 1913, Kirstenbosch is a 36 hectare garden, filled with some of the most stunning vistas and plant life you will ever witness. Upon entering the gardens, you will first see a large greenhouse that you must take a walk through to see some of the species of plants found all across southern Africa. Here, you’ll find everything from fynbos (a shrubland vegetation that is seen throughout much of South Africa) to cactus.
Also, don’t miss a walk along the Boomslang walkway, which is a suspended walkway that sits at the treetops and overlooks the gardens. It’s truly stunning and a great spot for photographs!
As you stroll through the walking paths and along the immaculately manicured grasses, you’ll witness a variety of bird species, including ducks, guinea fowl, and colorful Cape birds.
Also on site is The Kirstenbosch Tea Room and the Moyo Restaurant, which offers an exceptional African dining experience. The gift shop is also a must visit and features locally crafted goods – many of which are inspired by the gardens.
Below are some pictures from one of my recent trips:

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, looks like a lovely spot to visit. We shall go there when we are in Cape Town Feb/March 2015, and add another comment then.
Yes, Howard – it’s a must visit! Let us know how you like it (I know you’ll enjoy it though – it’s beautiful)
