Traveling to Africa is really exciting, but can also provide some anxiety and uncertainty when knowing what is acceptable while you are there. We provide as much information as we can for our clients before travel so they are prepared for any situation while traveling. Even with all of that available information, there can still be questions, so we took some of our notes from the entire team to create our list of Do’s and Don’ts to help you.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t wear perfume – avoid using strong deodorant and perfume – the smell can
  • Don’t leave trash behind
  • Don’t pack plastic
  • Don’t wander around camps at night without a camp escort
  • Don’t drink the tap water (they will most likely tell you what water to use, but always ask if you are unsure)
  • Don’t take pictures of border crossing or military vehicles
  • Don’t wear camouflage
  • Don’t stick your hands out of the vehicle to take a picture of a lion walking by
  • Don’t overthink it

Do’s:

  • Do read the information that your travel advisor gives you to prepare
  • Do listen to your guide – in fact, ask them questions about the animals, about their families, about their culture. And share about yourself. Your experience will be even greater from this.
  • Do be open-minded and flexible – go with an open heart
  • Do be patient on safari, there’s always something to see
  • Do put your phone or camera down and soak it all in
  • Do try the local foods
  • Do bring cash
  • Do secure your valuables (money and passports) in a safe place at all camps
  • Do take time to learn a few sayings in the local language
  • Do pack lightly
  • Do ask the guide if meeting local people, “can I take a picture”, “can I give a gift”
  • Do take extra memory cards and download to Google, online storage, or computer every night if possible (you don’t want to lose that memory card)
  • Do take binoculars – your own pair preferably, and one for each family member
  • Do get travel insurance
  • Do expect the unexpected – all of it is an adventure
