There are few places in this world that people fall in love with the way they fall in love with Africa. It gets into your heart and just doesn’t ever leave.
I can think of plenty of reasons why that is, but one reason is that there is a tremendous diversity of experiences open to you all across the continent … even the things you think you know are different every time you visit.
When I think of unique, one destination that comes to mind is Jack’s Camp, located in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans. If you know Botswana, it probably conjures images of boat safaris to see hippos and wading elephants … but not at Jack’s Camp.
Here, under billowing and luxurious tented pavilions, you’ll feel like an explorer of days gone by. The camp is steeped in history, filled with artifacts from the surrounding area. You’ll take a dip in your private plunge pool or go for a swim at the one-of-a-kind swimming pool pavilion, relax in the mess tent where you can play a game of pool on the antique table, or stop by the Persian tea tent for a sweet afternoon treat.
When you’re ready to venture out of the camp, you can visit – and interact with – the camps’ habituated meerkats. Go for a walk through the pans with Bushmen, or go on game drives to see unique desert wildlife like the elusive brown hyena or Kalahari lion.
Experienced rider or not, you can set off on a horseback safari or, in the dry season, drive your way across the salt-crusted pans on a quad bike. Archaeology lovers can spend time hunting for stone tools in the salt flats at Sowa Pan.
Whatever you choose, be sure to save time for relaxing — with a massage on your private deck, with a drink as you watch the sun go down over the flats, or under the blanket of stars that unfold above you each night.
And, if you fall a little more in love with Africa, don’t worry — it happens to everyone. ️
