Is Johannesburg worth exploring during a trip to South Africa? We say ABSOLUTLEY! From cultural villages to fascinating museums, and captivating historical sites to beautiful gardens, Johannesburg is celebrated for its rich diversity and meaningful history and culture. So, whether you choose to stay there for a day or several, there are a wide assortment of ways to explore this intriguing city, as well as its outskirts.
Below are some of the best experiences and Johannesburg tours to enjoy while on a South Africa vacation:
The Jozi Story of Gold at Gold Reef City: Take a step back in time at Gold Reef City to explore the gold mining history of Johannesburg. This attraction is actually a replica of old Johannesburg, dating back to 1890, and is built around a mining shaft that was once known as the richest gold mine in the world. Here, you’ll be able to walk around the area and feel as though you are living in the late 1800s in Johannesburg with pub-lined streets and old mining town architecture.
During a tour of The Jozi Story of Gold, you’ll explore . . .
- The Dowse House – where you’ll learn about the home schooling system in the late 1800s.
- Gold Pour – this is a demonstration where you’ll discover how bullion was created, using liquid gold.
- Mr. Ohlthaver’s House – where you’ll explore the home of one of the famous mine officials during the late 1800s.
- Underground Mine Tour – This is one of the most exciting elements of the tour and is when you will travel down into the gold mine to learn about the history of the mine and experience what it was like for miners to work back in the day.
- After the tour, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional tribal and miners’ gumboot dance demonstration!
Visit the Lesedi Cultural Village: Take an hour’s drive north of Johannesburg for an interactive experience at Lesedi Cultural Village and discover fascinating facts, traditions, superstitions, and rituals amongst the many tribes of South Africa. During a visit to the cultural village, you’ll have the opportunity to visit four traditional homesteads, including a Zulu home, Xhosa home, Pedi home, and Basotho home. Each of the homes will provide you with a highly unique insight into the various ancient tribes of South Africa.
There are also two traditional dining experiences offered at the Lesedi Cultural Village, where you’ll be able to indulge in flavorful African cuisine. These unique dining experiences are offered twice a day–one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Brenthurst Gardens: For a relaxing morning or afternoon, head to the beautifully manicured Brenthurst Gardens to soak in the soothing sounds and sights of nature. The gardens are comprised of remarkable oak trees, circular lawns, miniature forests, a cultivated Japanese garden, a rose garden, striking sculptures, and exquisite fountains.
We suggest enjoying a private walking tour, guided by the head gardener.
