Many people don’t realize that South Africa is home to hundreds of wildlife reserves. When travelers think of South Africa they often only think of its flagship park, Kruger National Park. But one of our top 10 favorite reserves in all of South Africa has to be the malaria-free Kwandwe Private Nature Reserve. Here, guests can witness the Big Five, relax in luxury, enjoy exceptional cuisine, embark on bush walks, and immerse themselves into conservation efforts—all while experiencing world-class personalized service.

Right now, during the springtime in Kwandwe, the wildflowers blanket the land, baby animals tag along next to their mothers, and the temperatures are mild and delightfully pleasant.

See below for a brief glimpse into the various elements that make a trip to Kwandwe Private Nature Reserve so magical:

Accommodation at Kwandwe: Kwandwe is made up of four charming, Relais & Chateaux accredited lodges: Great Fish River Lodge, Ecca Lodge, Uplands Homestead, and Melton Manor. Each lodges boasts its own unique character while embodying Kwandwe’s vision for luxury and first-class service.

For small groups of friends or those on an African family safari vacation, Kwandwe offers two exclusive-use villas: Uplands Homestead and Melton Manor. Both of these properties feature their own private 4X4 safari vehicle, as well as a personal ranger / host, chef, and butler. You can certainly rest assured that when you stay at one of Kwandwe’s exclusive villas, your every need will be anticipated in advance and attended to at the drop of a hat.

Days at Kwandwe: Abundant with wildlife, Kwandwe Game Reserve provides the ultimate setting for game drives and South Africa walking safari tours. Days at Kwandwe usually begin with a light snack in the mornings, immediately followed by a morning game drive as the sun begins to rise over the horizon. Upon arrival back to the lodge, guests enjoy a delectable breakfast before taking a dip in their private plunge pool or enjoying a leisurely walk with their guide through the reserve.

The afternoons call once again for a game drive and just as the sun begins to go down, travelers enjoy a sundowner and snacks in the bush. After an exciting day of game viewing, guests retreat back to their rooms to delight in a soothing bubble bath and shower before sitting down for an incredible dinner beneath the African stars. Meals can be enjoyed outdoors at the lodge’s boma or in the dining area. You can also have your dinner served on your private suite deck.
