To the surprise of many, penguins reside in the Western Cape of South Africa. It’s true! They’re not just found in cold places. Visitors on a trip to South Africa can visit a variety of different penguin colonies all across the coast. The closest one to Cape Town city center is Boulders Beach and is just a short drive away. If you are driving along the coast, though you can consider visiting one of the other colonies as they are usually less crowded than the popular Boulders.
My personal favorite penguin colony is Stony Point at Betty’s Bay. This is a wonderful place to stop if you are driving to Hermanus or Gansbaai and is usually not corded. It costs only USD$1 for visitors to access.
Upon arrival at Stony Point, visitors can walk along the wooden walkway to view hundreds upon hundreds of penguins and gorgeous, sweeping oceanside views.
Some of the penguins are so close you can even touch them–but don’t!! They have powerful jaws that can bite a finger off . . . And no one wants have an accident with a penguin on their African safari vacation, so please keep your hands away from the little guys.
As you stand on the walkway, looking out at the penguins, you’ll notice some jumping in and out of the water, lounging in the sun, and snuggling up with others.
