How Africa Transformed One Traveler’s Life

Returning from a recent trip to South Africa, our client, Karen Banks, shares the details of how Africa has changed her life.

1. What inspired you to travel to Africa?

People tell you Africa changes you. It is impossible to put it into words. It is an experience everyone should have in their lifetime. In Africa you feel grounded in an indescribable way because by choice I had no connection to the outside world or technology. It forces you to be in the moment because you don’t know what the next minute will bring. There is a constant sense of awe and surprise. In April, I was supposed to move to NYC after my trip to Africa in March. I could not move to a city where there is so much energy and so few places to reconnect to nature.

My chiropractor recommended Sandy (CEO of Hills of Africa). The minute you speak to Sandy you can hear her passion and love for Africa. I traveled alone, yet I never felt unsafe or lonely. Sandy and her staff went above and beyond with cards and small treasures at each destination. They are absolutely an amazing team. Beyond brilliant!

2. Was Africa what you expected? In what ways was it different than what you expected?

Africa was the most amazing trip I have taken in my life. Everyone tells you that you will be changed forever. And you are: the people of Africa are the most resilient people I have met. No matter the adversity – and there is a lot – they still smile and live each day.

3. List the top three best parts of your trip to Africa. What made these experiences so special and unique to you?

The camps and the guides were the best parts of my trip because they were so educated on the animals, vegetation, and area. The people I met in each camp were wonderful. My Cape Town tour with Pam, was also in the top three. Not necessarily in that  order.

4. Is there another trip to Africa in the future for you? Yes definitely! If so, would you travel to the same countries or different ones?

I would like to try a few different countries next time, but would go back to Botswana and Cape Town. Victoria Falls is a onetime thing.

5. How was your experience working with Hills of Africa?

My experience working with Hills of Africa was amazing and they all exceeded my expectations with their attention to detail all along the way. I traveled alone and felt incredibly safe the entire time.
